Insta-Jealousy

Relevant Magazine writer, Shauna Niequist, recently published a super convicting article titled Instagram's Envy Effect (<--- click the link for the full article). For those of us born between 1985 - 1993, we have a particular social media experience unlike those a few years older and a few years younger. We are bilingual in a sense, a bridge between the two generations. You know what I am talking about, the 30-somethings that don't quite understand the difference between writing on a facebook wall and sending a facebook message. And then of course you have the 16-year-old at the other end of the spectrum letting us know about every new follower, every new retweet, and every new shirt they got, all communicated with a #hashtag.

We are the few that experienced Xanga and MySpace, yet we were immersed in the beginning of Facebook. However, we "got out" just in time for the obsessive take over of Twitter and Instagram. ie - we don't have 1500 twitter followers and get 314 likes on our Instagram pictures. (If you do, I hope you have a blue checkmark next to your name) Growing up during the booming growth of social media is a weird concept to process, being connected enough to be normal but slowly becoming only semi-connected as things are changing. (Does that even make sense!!) I feel like I am just sitting back and witnessing the take over of social media in the lives of those around us.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from Niequist's article for you to chew on:
  • The danger of the internet is that it’s very very easy to tell partial truths—to show the fabulous meal but not the mess to clean up afterward. To display the smiling couple-shot, but not the fight you had three days ago. To offer up the sparkly milestones but not the spiraling meltdowns.
  • Our envy buttons also get pushed because we rarely check Facebook when we’re having our own peak experiences. We check it when we’re bored and when we’re lonely, and it intensifies that boredom and loneliness.
  • It makes sense, then, that anyone else’s fun or beauty or sparkle gets under our skin. It magnifies our own dissatisfaction with that moment. When you’re waiting for your coffee to brew, the majority of your friends probably aren’t doing anything any more special. But it only takes one friend at the Eiffel Tower to make you feel like a loser.
  • I so easily fall prey to the seduction of other people’s partial truths and heavily filtered photos, making everything look amazing. And their amazing looking lives make me feel not amazing at all.
  • For many of us, walking away from the Internet isn’t an option. But using it to connect instead of compare is an option, and a life-changing one.
  • Let’s choose community. Let’s stop comparing. Let’s start connecting.

I recently saw Warm Bodies, a funny zombie twist on Romeo and Juliet. Don't judge me, it was in the dollar theater.

One of the best lines from the movie is when R, the guy zombie, is walking around the airport and describing what it's like to be dead and walking around after the apocalypse.

"This is a typical day for me. I shuffle around, occasionally bumping into people, unable to apologize or say much of anything. It must have been so much better before when everyone could express themselves, communicate their feelings and just enjoy each others company."

Here's the moral of the story, this zombie quote could be applied to April 22, 2013. We are all just shuffling around and not expressing ourselves in real intentional community, we are trying to fit it in 140 characters or less. Oh world!!!!!!!!! Here I am expressing myself on my laptop in a blog post.

I need to go outside now, bye!!!!!!

Let the Wild Rumpus Start

The night Max wore his wolf suit and made mischief of one kind
and another
his mother called him “WILD THING!”
and Max said “I’LL EAT YOU UP!”
so he was sent to bed without eating anything.
That very night in Max’s room a forest grew
and grew and grew until his ceiling hung with vines
and the walls became the world all around
and an ocean tumbled by with a private boat for Max
and he sailed off through night and day
and in and out of weeks
and almost over a year
to where the wild things are.

And when he came to the place where the wild things are
they roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth
and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws
till Max said “BE STILL!”
and tamed with the magic trick
of staring into all their yellow eyes without blinking once
and they were frightened and called him the most wild thing of all
and made him king of all wild things.
“And now,” cried Max, “let the wild rumpus start!”
“Now stop!” Max said and sent the wild things off to bed without their supper.
And Max the king of all wild things was lonely and wanted to be where
someone loved him best of all. Then all around from far away across the world
he smelled good things to eat
so he gave up being king of where the wild things are.
But the wild things cried, “Oh please don’t go we’ll eat you up-we love you so!”
And Max said, “No!”
The wild things roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth
and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws
but Max stepped into his private boat and waved good-bye
and sailed back over a year
and in and out of weeks
and through a day
and into the night of his very own room
where he found his supper waiting for him
and it was still hot.

Where the Wild Things Are

October 2012

After years of going back and forth of wanting a tattoo, and living under my mom's roof with her negative opinion toward tattoos, Greg decided that today was the day and he hopped in the car and drove to Athens to get a tattoo with his college roommates. Our friend Lucy Williams wrote out his favorite quote from Maurice Sendak's children's book "Where the Wild Things Are." When Max goes on his own adventure and becomes the king of the wild things, he cries "Let the wild rumpus start!" And so Max's adventure away from home begins. When he tells the wild things to go to sleep, he finds himself wanting to be with the people that love him most of all. At the end of the story, Max comes home to his family with dinner still hot on the table for him. For Greg, getting this tattoo symbolized that no matter what adventures he goes on, or what wild rumpuses he gets into, he always has my mom and me to come back to.

November 2012

Greg home for Thanksgiving. No peep about a tattoo!

December 2012

Greg home for an entire month during Christmas. He wore socks ALL the time! Even Christmas morning sitting around the Christmas tree opening presents and laughing together. I feel so betrayed.

January & Febrary 2013

He kept his secret well. Even some of my very best friends covered for him. There was one instance when I showed up to Milledgeville unexpectedly to visit him, and our friend Spencer gave him a pair of socks seconds before I arrived.

March 16th, 2013 4:00pm

Greg and I were in the car in Milledgeville and he said "If I tell you something, you have to swear you won't get mad at me and you won't tell mom." Now when your 19-year-old brother says that to you, all of the worst things start coming to mind. Needless to say, I was relieved when he showed me the tattoo. Then when he told me the story I was a puddle of emotion because if you know me you know I love Greg more than any other human in the world.  Later that evening we said our goodbyes and I headed back to Atlanta and I swore I would never tell mom.

March 16th, 2013 9:00pm

I TOLD MY MOM!!!! I couldn't keep it in, I was so excited! Greg loves us so much he permanently inked his body with something so meaningful and sweet, of course I had to tell my mom so we could cry together about how cool Greg is. She wasn't as excited to hear the news as I was. Her feelings were hurt that her precious baby didn't tell her the truth (I think this is a mom thing). So I gave her 24 hours to be sad... THEN the planning began.

I proposed the idea that we punk Greg for his birthday by getting the same tattoos and getting Lucy to draw it for us too. Surprisingly, my mom's stance on tattoos slowly began shifting. Lucy & I met up at church the next week for her to draw some sketches for us. Within a few days, my mom and I made a very permanent decision to 1. be the coolest family ever 2. prepare for the most epic prank 3. get greg the best birthday present

March 27th, 2013

I called my mom at work and said, "Hey today is the day! Let's go to Psycho Tattoo when you leave the church!" Then... it.... happened!! And my mom managed to become BFFs with everyone that works at Pyscho Tattoo.

Ann & me gettin' inked up!

March 27th - April 14th, 2013

Now the hard part... keeping a secret!! How did he do this for 6 months!

April 14th, 2013

We decided the way we wanted to reveal our tattoos was to first make Greg squirm and think he got found out and also to make sure that his friends were there. A lot of people knew we knew, and some friends knew we had tattoos and they knew Greg didn't know we knew!

Greg hates being the center of attention, so naturally I invited a group of his friends over to watch him open presents and eat cake. He was so frustrated with me. Until we got to his final present...

My mom and I got him a new copy of the "Where the Wild Things Are" DVD and in the package, we included the sketches of Lucy's drawings for the tattoos. He knew he was found out. At this point his hands were shaking and he later told us he knew he wouldn't get in too much trouble in the moment because all of his friends were around.

I told him that the good news is he won't be going down alone because I decided to get the same tattoo.

And then he threw me under the bus and said "How are you going to punish her!?"

Then I asked him if there was anything he wanted to tell mom...

Before he could confess... My mom wanted to show him something first!!

Then we spent time talking about all the "almost told you" moments and laughed and enjoyed the company of great friends.

But wait, there's more!!

Greg is 20!!!

Happy birthday my baby brother!! I am thankful to be part of your wild rumpus.

Housesitting Adventures!

My second job is the bee's knees. Housesitting is fun for a handful of reasons.
  1. Katherine Medlock has the most comfortable bed.
  2. The Medlock refrigerator has been blessed by the grocery gods.
  3. Bella is a fireball of energy that closely resembles a muppet.
  4. Quiet times at the Medlock's are a glimpse of heaven (excellent window placement for sunrises).
  5. It's getting paid to go on vacation while still working for my other job.
Bella, the muppet.

My week of housesitting included some fun visits from people I love as well as nice surprises and encouraging friends! Enjoy!

Great friends coming over to help package Peach State Pride orders!

La Madeline dates with Courtney and she brought me my favorite flowers!!

Chasing Bella for an hour while she had a standoff with a squirrel.

Exploring vintage clothing shops with Katie & Rachel.

Cooking with Ray Tay all the way

Homemade tomato basil sauce

Add shrimp... mmmmmmm!

Taste test is necessary!

Dinner date for 2! Tulips still looking good.

We don't just cook here. We bake too! No one was harmed by Bella's laser eyes.

Making triple layer funfetti cake for Greg's 20th birthday!

Decorating the cake for sweet Greg!

For the grand finale of a wonderful week, I got to enjoy a trip to The Fox to see Drew & Ellie Holcomb and Needotbreathe perform.

Personally I believe that all the males on stage were cramping Ellie's style. I mean, yes you boys can sing, but Ellie made you look like amateurs. It should be called "The Ellie Holcomb Tour featuring some boys." I leave you with the most goosebump giving, beautiful, slice of heaven, best part of the set.

This is a gem too.

Good for the Heart

Yesterday, I got super stressed out about some things going on at work so I decided to step away and go on an adventure with my friend Megan and the pups we are housesitting. We ended up at an exotic pool in the back of the Signal Hill neighborhood. AKA we snuck through the fence and borrowed the Renno's pool while they are on a mission trip.

Then I got back to the house where I am housesitting and I called up my #1 girl, Ann. We decided that with all of Metro Atlanta on Spring Break, there would be no traffic and we would meet at the Marietta Square for a delightful dollar sushi Monday at Thaicoon! We finished eating at 7:30 and the sun was still warming our cheeks like the perfect spring evening. We went on a stroll through the square and saw couples holding hands, high schoolers watching a screaming goat video on their phones and laughing, a couple obviously on one of their first dates, children playing on the little train playground, and an elderly couple holding hands and still in love.

I was thinking it couldn't get any better and then I saw my favorite flowers in the whole wide world lining all the surrounding landscape areas of the town square. Jesus was telling me "I have such a beautiful perfect life planned for you and it's going to be even better than these hundreds of tulips I had specially planted just for your heart"

As if that wasn't enough to make my day great, I got the privilege of hosting my dear friend Maggie Mayo for the evening. We were both in dire need of a pampering girls night so I got all the necessary supplies and waited for the arrival of the Magi.

BEWARE.... The next photo is disturbing.

Chia Pudding

After always passing by the bubbly looking Mamma Chia drinks at Whole Foods I decided to look into these fun little guys... aka Chia Seeds!

Don't they make you curious?

This is what I learned about Chia Seeds
  • Good source of omega fatty acids
  • An easy to digest form of protein full of minerals
  • Full of vitamins
  • Great source of Fiber
  • Increased energy
  • They are super absorbent and the develop a gelatinous texture when they are soaked in liquid. It's like a science project!!!
Last weekend after hanging with my super healthy friend Brooke, she turned me onto this yummy dessert recipe so I wanted to share it with you! (She is the epitome of cool, I aspire to be like her so I do things like buy her car and copy her recipes...) If you doubt my recipe skills just go look on the Whole Foods website, that's where this one can be found.

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup chia seeds
  • 2 cups unsweetened soymilk, almondmilk or ricemilk
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Combine chia seeds, almond milk and vanilla in a a container with a lid.
  • Tighten the lid and shake well to mix the ingredients together (You could just stir together seeds, almond milk and vanilla in a bowl.)
  • Refrigerate overnight.
  • Stir it one last time before you serve it.
  • Spoon the pudding into bowls.
  • Garnish it with your favorite fruit for some added flair.

Ta-dahhhh! Pudding. It's the most effortless thing ever.
